Ashe Services for Aging in West Jefferson was founded in 1977 to provide services, activities and opportunities for elderly and disabled residents of Ashe County. Demand for elder care services is rising in the county, with nearly 30 percent of the county’s population expected to be over 65 by 2020.
With the help of a $360,000 grant from the Rural Center, the nonprofit built a 55-bed adult care home to meet growing needs. The facility consists of 31 units for regular occupants and 24 special care units for occupants with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The new facility will provide a safe, positive environment where elderly Ashe County residents can receive medical care, participate in recreational activities and get help with personal care needs. The project is expected to create 30 jobs.
